DIY Cake Stand | Eco-Crafting with ResinCrete

DIY Cake Stand ------> www.aimsysantics.co.uk

We are going crafty in today’s post, and Eco crafting with ResinCrete to make some wonderful designs. I’ll show you how to use the product to create a DIY cake stand.

Today I have teamed up with JDiction to have a go at some eco-crafting with their product ResinCrete. I’ll walk you through using ResinCrete to create some fabulous designs, including a coaster and a DIY cake stand.
I have previously used resin to create some beautiful resin art as well as resin coasters and now I am trying out a different resin product.

Eco-Crafting with JDiction

So, as I have already written, JDiction reached out to me to try one of their eco-friendly products ResinCrete and to share my experience with you.

JDiction is a brand that was born of a love of resin. As part of this, they wanted to share their love of crafting with everyone, especially the benefits that crafting can have on a person. They believe that art and crafting are a perfect way of improving a person’s mood and physical function. This is something that resonates with me in my everyday job, where I can see the benefits of engaging in something meaningful, like crafts on a person.
There is just something so rewarding about going through the process of making something and getting a great result in the end. Although I fully believe the ‘doing’ is much more important than the result.

ResinCrete

From their love of resin, JDiction developed the eco-friendly and safe craft of ResinCrete. ResinCrete is something I would describe as a ceramic-making kit and mixes very similar to Plaster of Paris. ResinCrete is a natural mineral-based formula that is perfect for unleashing your creativity, even as a beginner to the craft. Not only is it easy to mix and use, but it allows you to craft responsibly and safely. That’s right, you do not need all of the safety equipment that comes with crafting with resin, which makes it perfect to involve the younger crafters too.

ResinCrete has a short curing time of 30 minutes so if you are looking for a quick craft, then this is a great one to try out. Even though the curing time is short, it does not impact the quality of the results, as the product in the end is very durable and sets with a smooth texture. ResinCrete is also food safe, and therefore I wanted to try it out to make the DIY cake stand to test this out.

DIY Cake Stand – What’s in the Box:

JDiction sent me the complete ResinCrete kit which includes everything you need to get creating from the get-go. I did make a coaster using one of their moulds but also tried out one of my existing moulds to create the DIY cake stand. The video version of this post gives you a bit more of an overview of the coaster-making process, as well as the DIY cake stand.

ResinCrete complete kit box - unopened

Inside the box, you get three different moulds to try out, a heart shape, a star shape and a bobbled coaster mould. The silicone moulds feel really good quality in hand, and after testing them out, I would say they are of a higher quality than some you can purchase online.

Also in the box is the ResinCrete powder itself. You get a large 1kg resealable bag, which also includes instructions on how to mix it. I will go through the ratios and calculations shortly.

To aid with the mixing and measuring of the ResinCrete, you are provided with two plastic measuring cups, a scoop and a spatula. For adding a colourful touch to the designs, the kit also includes a pack of pigments.

Finally, to add finishing touches to your creations there are several sheets of sandpaper, to remove any rough edges as well as a small pot of wax. The wax helps to seal the designs and provides a waterproof seal to them.

DIY Cake Stand – Calculating the Ratios

I previously stated that the process of using ResinCrete is super easy, which it is. However, there are calculations to complete before we can get to using the product, and this involves a bit of mathematics. (I am not a fan of maths!)

Firstly, the amount of Resincrete mixture needs to be calculated according to the mould you are using. I used this free resin calculator to help with this, which makes the process so much easier.

Then it is time for the next calculation. We need a ratio of 10:3, which is 10 of the mixture to 3 of water. For every 100g of powder, you need 30g of water. This is where it can become a bit complicated, especially if you are not a fan of maths like me. However, I do have a calculation that helped me get the correct measurements needed: Total Weight(g) X 0.3 = amount of water needed.
To make it a bit more understandable; the bottom mould of the cake stand required 255g of powder, so I multiplied 255 by 0.3 to get 75g of water.

It is also important to note that adding colour pigment to the mixture can alter the amount, which is dependent on what method of pigments you are using. I found I only required a few drops of the pigment so this did not exceed the maximum amount of 2% of the total weight.

DIY Cake Stand – Crafting Process with ResinCrete

Something I learned when crafting with the ResinCrete was to make sure that you have everything prepared before mixing. The working time once the water is mixed into the powder is 10 minutes, so you have to be quick for the best results.

I added an extra bit of sparkle to the mould too, using a silver leaf. I had varying results with the silver leaf, as it did leave bumps in the mixture. The cake tiers were therefore not as smooth as they could be. Also with the ResinCrete being opaque, the silver leaf can quite easily be engulfed and not visible.

Using measuring scales, weigh out the powder and water in the two measuring cups. Then, add the water to the powder and mix until the mixture is smooth and runny. You are looking for a creamy silky-type consistency with no lumps.

Then it is time to add in the pigments for a pop of colour. If you decide not to add colour, then the ResinCrete will remain white when cured. I decided to split mine into two colours leaving one white and the other blue. I did add a bit of silver mica powder to see if this would come through when cured, which it did slightly. It wasn’t as effective as if used in regular resin.

Mix in the pigment until fully combined. With the powder being white, colours can vary and you are likely to get a pastel hue to the colour. For a deeper colour, add more of the pigment.

DIY Cake Stand – Pouring into Moulds and Curing

Once the mixture is ready, it is time to add it to the moulds. Remember we only have 10 minutes of working time from the start of the mixing process.

The mixture will pour smoothly into the moulds. The good thing about the ResinCrete is that it is self-levelling in the mould. It should also not produce many air bubbles, giving it that smooth finish.
I decided to mix the two colours in a marbling, swirl-type effect. Adding the two colours separately and crossing these over. Use the spatula to blend the swirls a bit more as well as push the mixture into the edges of the mould.

I found that I needed a little bit more mixture for my larger cake mould. However, given the fast-curing time, an extra batch of the mixture would not be possible. Therefore, the bottom tier of the cake stand isn’t as smooth and level as it could be. This is a complete user error and not the product itself.

Curing

Once in the mould, the curing time is quite quick, being 30 minutes. After 30 minutes the product is ready to come out of the mould.

I did test this and removed the DIY cake stand pieces from the moulds at 30 minutes. They were pretty solid and durable from the get-go.

DIY Cake Stand – Smoothing and Sealing

The edges of the cake stand tiers were a little sharp from where the ResinCrete cured from the edges. These therefore need a bit of sanding to smooth. Also, the silver leaf caused some bumps, and therefore the edges of this need sanding to smooth them out. Other than these two issues, the rest of the cake tiers were pretty smooth.

The coaster mould provided yielded even better results, with very minimum sanding needed on the edges.

When sanding, be careful as it can change some of the patterns and blend the colours. A wipe of the excess dust can help rectify this. Also, adding the wax to seal will help brighten any of the colour that has dulled slightly from sanding.

Using a rag or kitchen roll, apply the wax all over the cake stand pieces to seal them. According to the ResinCrete instructions, this will create a waterproofing effect on the product.

DIY Cake Stand – Assembly

Once the pieces are sanded and sealed, the tiers can be assembled to create the DIY cake stand.
I bought cake stand accessories* (affiliate link) to do this, as the ones that had previously come with the mould had already been used in a previous project.

I was slightly worried that the cake stand wouldn’t be durable when attaching the tiers. Luckily, the cake stand assembles well and there is no issue with the middle holes. They do not crumble or misshape when placed in the cake stand accessories.

Simply, start with the bottom tier, placing the screw with a protective pad between the tier and the screw.
Place another protective pad on the top part of the tier and over the screw, before placing it on a metal washer (included in the kit). Follow this by adding one of the ‘legs’, making sure a protective pad is placed on before adding the next tier. Another protective pad against the tier on the top side, following the process until all three tiers are connected.

You should then have a fully assembled DIY cake stand. Hopefully, you will have had a fun eco-crafting session with ResinCrete by JDiction!
