I have a woodworking project to share with you today, and one that will add a bit of pizazz to your home décor. See how to make a DIY plant stand for your home!

I have teamed up with my dad for this week’s project to learn some woodworking skills. We have already teamed up to make a DIY wooden desk calendar and are teaming up again to make a DIY plant stand.

I would say this is a fairly easy project, however, without my dad’s help or tools I think it would have taken a lot longer. In the project we use a variety of power tools including a mitre saw, pedestal drill and a band saw; however, I would say that you would be able to make this with basic equipment. A saw and handheld drill would work well if you use them correctly!

The idea behind this plant stand is to make it versatile and allow plants to sit at varying heights. There is only one shelf to house the plant pot, but turning the stand the opposite way will allow for the shelf to sit at a different height. Therefore, you could make a few of these together to change the height of your plants.

So if you want to make a DIY plant stand, then let’s get crafting!

DIY Plant Stand

To make this plant stand you will need the following. As stated above you can make with less advanced tools if you are confident in using them.

• 2cmx2cm wood pieces – 30cm in length
• 3cmx3cm wood pieces – 17.5cm in length
• 5mm-2.5cm length dowel pieces
• Wood Glue
• Mitre saw
• Pedestal drill
• Band saw
• Hammer
• Clamps
• File & sandpaper
• Varnish or Wax or Paint
• Pencil
• Ruler

Step 1 – Cut Pieces to Size

The first step in making the DIY plant stand is to ensure that you have all the wooden pieces measured and cut to size.
For the plant stand legs, you will need four 2X2 wood pieces that are 30cm long. We used the mitre saw to cut these down to size, but you can use a hand saw or hacksaw for this.

For the inner piece, we will create a cross for the plant pot to stand on. You will need two 3X3 wood pieces measuring 17.5cm in length.

Once the pieces are cut to size it is a good idea to sand/file the edges so that they are not splintering or rough.

Leg & Middle Measurements

Next, we need to create other measurements to help the pieces slot together.
On the leg pieces, measure up from one end 12.5cm on the edge of one side of the piece (corner). Then measure 1cm on one side of this; this should give you the points to drill for the holes for the dowels. Complete this on all four leg pieces.

On the middle pieces, measure 7.5cm in from either side, giving you a 2.5cm gap in between. This part will be cut so the pieces can cross.
On both ends of these pieces, measure 1.5cm in to find the centre, making sure this line is vertical to the middle measure piece. Then measure 1 cm on either side of this line, marking these vertically, so that you have two lines crossing through the middle line. Where the lines cross will be the points to drill the holes for the dowels.

After this, turn the middle pieces so the marked pieces (on the main piece) are facing upwards. Continue the middle line marked onto this side for a few centimetres. Then use an angled ruler, placing this in the edge corner and diagonally placing it so it meets the middle line. Mark on either side so it creates a sort of triangle. Complete this on either end of both pieces. This piece will be cut out so that the pieces can be secured to the legs.

Step 2 – Cut the Markings

First, we will cut the 2.5cm gap in the middle pieces. We use a mitre saw for this, but you can use a regular hand saw. Cut out the gap carefully, only cutting halfway down each piece. Finish this by filing/sanding the piece so it is smooth.

Once both middle pieces are cut, test them out to make sure they fit together in a cross, and that the ends are flush. If the pieces sit up slightly, sand or file down until they fit.

Then use the pedestal drill (or a handheld) to drill the holes marked that are just slightly larger than the 5mm diameter dowels. Do this on all the leg pieces as well as either end of the middle cross pieces.

After this, it is time to cut the end pieces of the middle pieces. We use a band saw, however; you can use a smaller handsaw. Cut along the lines to remove the triangle. Finish by sanding to remove any rough edges from the cutting.

Step 3 – Assemble the DIY Plant Stand

Once everything is cut, it is time to assemble the DIY plant stand.
First, place wood glue into the two middle pieces’ gaps, and place them together. Make sure to push them together fully so they lay flush with each other. Wipe away any excess glue. Set this aside and allow it to fully adhere and dry.

Then it is time to glue in the dowel pieces. Place a small amount of wood glue onto one end of the dowel piece and place it into one of the holes drilled into the leg pieces. Push this as far as you can, gently helping it along by tapping it with a hammer. You want about half of the dowel inside. Again, wipe away any excess glue. Continue until all four leg pieces have two dowel pieces attached. Set aside and allow to dry and adhere again. This might take a few hours or even overnight.

Once the above has dried, we can begin attaching the legs of the plant stand.
Place wood glue onto one end of the crossed middle piece, then line up one of the leg pieces where the dowels are attached and place it into the holes drilled into the middle piece. Push this together so that the leg sits flush with the middle piece. Wipe away any excess glue. Carry on adding the legs around the middle piece until all are in place. Secure together with clamps to keep it in place. We also used a few more of the middle cross pieces on the top and bottom (without dowels) to help keep the leg pieces in the correct place whilst the glue sets.

Place to one side and allow to fully dry.

Step 4 – Varnish or Paint

Once the DIY plant stand is dry, remove the clamps and the additional wooden pieces. Use sandpaper to sand down the whole surface, wiping away any excess dust.

Then use a varnish, wax or paint of your choice to complete the plant stand. We went for a clear varnish to keep the wood grain effect; however, you can have it however you like and to suit your style/décor.
Allow to dry and add more coats as necessary and then the DIY plant stand is ready to house your beautiful house plants!
