Another day, another DIY Beauty post! Today I am looking at recreating one of Lush’s best selling cleansers in how to make your own DIY Angels on Bare Skin!
So, if you are a regular reader of Aimsy’s Antics, you will know that I have dabbled in a few Beauty DIYs on the blog, and today I bring you another one. A DIY Angels on Bare Skin copycat/dupe recipe.
DIY Angels on Bare Skin:
Lush has been making and selling this cleanser for years, and it is one of their best sellers. Angels on bare skin is a fresh cleanser, that not only cleanses the face but it gives a gentle exfoliation too. Plus it is fab for calming and soothing the skin!
I have been using this cleanser for years, and I absolutely love it. I talked about in my Products I use whilst travelling post.
It has done wonders for my skin (although my skin is not at its best at the moment – wearing a mask all day really does take its toll). My last pot of the cleanser was running out, so I hopped onto Lush’s website to re-order so more. Due to the current situation, and Lush reducing the number of products they are making and selling meant that my go-to exfoliating cleanser is currently unavailable. Disaster! So, I have taken matters into my own hands to have a go at recreating the cleanser at home.
Turns out making your own Angels on bare skin, is super easy and quick to do. Most of the ingredients you can buy from the local shop, or on Amazon, making it a great beauty DIY to have a go at, at home.
So, if you would like to see how to make your own version of DIY Angels on Bare Skin, then keep reading and/or skip to the Video at the end of the post to see how to do so.
Now, I am not saying that you should recreate all of Lush’s products at home, but if you can and save money doing it, then why not? It means you have more money to spend on other Lush products, or treating yourself. Self-care is so important at the moment!
Let’s get crafting!
DIY Angels on Bare Skin –
What you need:
So, to make this fresh exfoliating cleanser, you are going to need the following ingredients and items.

- 25g Ground Almonds
- 20g Kaolin Clay*
- 15g Vegetable Glycerin*
- 30 drops of Rose Water*
- 4-5 drops Lavender Essential Oil
- 4 drops Marigold (Tagetes) Essential Oil*
- 3 drops Chamomile Essential Oil
- Dried Lavender buds
You will also need:
- Large mixing bowl
- Weighing scales
- Spoon
- Pipette or dropper
- Greaseproof / baking paper
Step 1 – weigh out ground almonds and kaolin clay
The first thing to do is place your mixing bowl onto the weighing scales and set the scales to 0. Then weigh out 25g of the ground almonds. To this, weigh out the 20g of Kaolin clay and mix in with the ground almonds. Now, to weigh the clay out, re-set the weighing scales back to 0 so that you don’t have to do any math calculations.
Lush’s cleanser is mainly made up of these two ingredients. The ground almonds are to gently exfoliate the skin, with the kaolin clay can help to control oiliness, as well as soothe and calm the skin. Also a fun fact for you – when you wet the mixture you will get a milky substance from it. This is, in fact, the kaolin clay reacting with the water and not milk coming from the almonds. I didn’t realise that until I looked into how to make my own!
Step 2 – Add in the glycerin
Next, it is time to add in the vegetable glycerin. This helps to bind the mixture together, as well as offer some moisturising property to the cleaners for your skin. Now, I found that I needed to add more of this, later on, however you should start with the 15g, and then add a little bit more gradually later if it hasn’t combined when the other ingredients are added. When you have added in the glycerin, give the mixture a good mix together.
Step 3 – Add in the rose water
To add more moisturising and calming properties to the cleanser, it is time to add in the rose water. I use a pipette to do this so that I have more control over the amount going into the mixture. You want to initially add in around 30 drops of the rose water, and then mix it in. You may find that the cleanser still isn’t binding together fully at this point, but that is fine because we will rectify that later on.
Rose water can also be used as a soothing facial toner as well!
Step 4 – Add essential oils
A few recipes I have seen add different essential oils into this cleanser, but I wanted to keep it more true to the Lush version. So, start by adding in the lavender oil. This helps balance and calm the skin. Then, add in the marigold essential oil, also known as tagetes oil. This helps keep the skin clean as it is antibacterial and antimicrobial. Finally add in the chamomile oil, which also soothes and calms the skin.
Give the oils a good mix into the mixture, making sure they are evenly combined throughout. This will hopefully mean you are getting all the goodness each time you use the cleanser.
Step 4 – Add more glycerin & rose water
If you are finding the mixture hasn’t clumped together, and still appears quite crumbly, then you want to add in a bit more glycerin and rose water. Do this in stages, alternating between the two, adding small amounts at a time. You don’t want to add large amounts, because it is more difficult to take these away and you could potentially ruin your DIY Angels on Bare Skin.
Step 5 – Lay out onto greaseproof paper
Now, it is time to form the cleanser into something useable and more lush-looking. So, place a piece of greaseproof paper down and sprinkle a handful of the dried lavender buds onto it. Then, scoop out your newly made DIY angels on bare skin on top of the lavender buds.
Use the edge of the greaseproof paper to squish the lavender buds into the mixture. You can also knead the mixture a little as well to make sure it is sticking together. Ideally, you want the mixture to form into a ball or a sausage shape. I found that some of my mixture was still a little crumbly in parts, but that is ok! Add more lavender buds if you don’t think there are enough in the mixture.
Step 6 – Place into an airtight container
When you are happy with the formation of your DIY angels on bare skin, it is time to place it in an airtight contaner. I used a jar with a clip-lock lid to really seal it. By using an airtight container, you will hopefully reduce the amount the mixture dries out.
This recipe also has a low water content with the rose water, however, it does not contain any preservatives, so bacteria can still breed in the mixture. Therefore you want to make this in small batches and use up within a few weeks.
Then your DIY Angels on Bare Skin is ready to go!

Definitely works out a lot cheaper in the long run, as this cleanser can get pretty pricey if you purchase it monthly.

Ohhhh this is really interesting! I’m in need of a good cleanser, but dread going to the shops and ask for advice, so might as well try this one at home first!
That is one of my pet peeves with Lush, the amount of times staff pounce on you. Then, when you actually need their advice there isn’t anyone around! Hope the cleanser turns out well for you if you give it a go. Let me know how it goes!

My skin is really sensitive to lavender and physical exfoliators so this one isn’t for me but it’s amazing that you’ve managed to make one of your favourite products at home. In the long run, I think it does work out much cheaper than buying a new pot, say every month.
I already had the liquid glycerin/ vegetable glycerin, the ground almonds, dried lavender buds and two of the essential oils already in. The kaolin clay cost just over £10 for the 1kg bag (i think) and the rosewater was around £5, but I am also using that as a toner too. I think the marigold essential oil was about £8. Does that help at all?

This is such a good hack! I haven’t used anything from Lush in years, I couldn’t really justify the money on some of their products so this is a fab alternative. Your version looks so similar too!
Oh, I know they are so expensive at times. I understand why because the ingredients they source are pricey, but bulk buying these ingredients really does work out more cost-effective when making your own. Definitely makes your skin feel lovely like the Lush version, so that is a winner in my book!

I love your DIYs, Aimsy, they’re so creative. And this is no exception – I’ve never tried any Lush skincare before but this sounds wonderful.
