Pom-Pom Cushion – How to Decorate your own

How to Make A Pom-Pom Cushion - www.aimsysantics

So I am back with another crafty post for you today. How to upstyle some cushions with a few pom-poms. A pom-pom cushion!

If you love a good pom-pom (like me) then this tutorial is for you. A perfect way of sprucing up your cushions to add a bit something-something to your decor. It is also a bit cheaper than buying from the store.

Pom-Pom cushion:

So, to make this cushion, you can either buy a cushion cover from the shops or have a go at making your own. Check out my tutorial on making an Envelope cushion to see how to make your own. Adding the pom-poms is the perfect way to finish off a handmade cushion.

Once you have bought or made your cushion, it is time to add on your pom-poms. There are lots of ways of making your own pom-poms, from using a cardboard template to using a pom-pom making. In this tutorial, I chose to use the latter, purely because of the number of pom-poms I needed to make. If you want to use the easy cardboard versions, check out how to make pom-poms.

There are several ways that you can add your pom-poms to the cushion; over the entire front of the cushion, or around the edge. You can really explore your creativeness with this. For this post, I chose to just place pom-poms around two opposite sides of the cushion; as I thought this was really effective with the cushions I had. But, I have made a pom-pom cushion where the pom-poms covered the whole front and it was super cute.

Making Pom-Poms:

To make your pom-poms for the fancy pom-pom cushion you will need the following items:

  • Wool in varying colours
  • Pom-pom maker*
  • Sewing needle and thread
  • Scissors
  • Cushion cover

For the cushions I made, I needed five of each colour per side, so ten pom-poms in total each side. For the 16×16″ cushion these were the smaller pom-poms, and the 18×18″ cushions were made with the next size up of the pom-pom maker.

Step 1 – Make your pom-poms

You want to grab your pom-pom maker for this. Open up the maker so that you have two ‘arms’. Begin wrapping your chosen wool around one of the arms, until it is pretty full with the wool, then close this arm into the maker. You then want to carry on wrapping the wool around the other arm of the maker, again until it is pretty full. Close this arm into the maker, and you should have two round ‘humps’ of wool. Cut the wool connecting it to the wool ball.

If you have used a continuous piece of wool, cut where it has crossed over onto the next arm to separate the two. Then using your scissors, cut down the middle of the top of each hump. Make sure you keep the arms into the maker, as you may lose your pieces of wool when cutting.

Cutting wool on a pom-pom maker

Once both sides are cut, you want to cut a piece of wool from your ball of wool and place this down one middle part of your pom-pom maker. Secure this tightly with a double or triple knot, this will make sure that your wool forms the pom-pom and doesn’t fall out all over the place. I usually wrap it around once, and then back on itself to make sure it is fully secure.

Then you have your pom-pom. Keep repeating this until you have enough pom-poms for your cushion.
I used two different colours of wool to be able to alternate my pom-poms on the edge of the cushion.

Step 2 – Add on the pom-poms

Once you have enough pom-poms for the cushion it is time to attach them. Now, you could use fabric glue for this, but I felt using a sewing needle and thread would be much more secure.

Double thread your needle for extra strength and bring this up through the knot of your pom-pom. Bring the needle back down through the knot so that the thread is fully attached. You could also do some form of loop knot her as well.

Sewing through a pom-pom

Then, thread your needle through the desired place on your cushion. Repeating this several times so that the pom-pom is fully secure. Finish by looping and knotting the thread.
You then want to measure out where your next pom-pom should go. Make sure you are checking throughout when attaching the pom-poms so that they are at an equal distance between them.

Attaching pom-poms to the cushion cover

If you are alternating colours, then when you move onto the opposite side, make sure that these alternate in colour as well. This will mean that you pom-poms are an alternate colour opposite each other. But, you can do the pattern however you like to suit your taste and decor etc.

Once all of your pom-poms are attached, you have been successful in making a pom-pom cushion!

  1. Pom-pom maker! I had no idea there was such a nifty little tool, and I bet they come in different sizes to.
This would be a fun way to spend a lazy afternoon; making pom-poms and sewing them onto cute cloth for the pillows. 🙂

    1. I didn’t realise how useful it would be until I needed to make loads of pom-poms! The pack I bought came in about 4 different sizes, so perfect for making lots of different pom-poms!
Definitely relaxing when you get in the swing of making them, so perfect when you want to spend a lazy afternoon, but be a bit productive.

  2. First of all, these are SOO cute! Secondly, I had no idea there was a pom pom maker. I made some pom poms years ago and saw on Pinterest that you use a fork to do it?! The technique you provided seems very easy and most importantly, they all come out uniform! Thanks for sharing.

    1. So cute right? I love a good pom-pom Pom-pom makers make it so much easier to make batches; although they can be a little bit flimsy. I haven’t tried the fork method, but have used a round cardboard template before; I will have to try the fork method out!

  4. This looks so good, so cute! I would literally never think to get a plain cushion cover and add details like this for myself so thanks for the inspo! It doesn’t seem too difficult either which is great. I think the only thing I’d likely struggle with is getting them in a straight line! x

    1. You definitely need to keep checking the placement of them, I had a few uneven spaces between a few of the pom-poms!
Its a really easy DIY and a great way to spruce up some cushions!
