Trying Diamond Painting for the first time | Review (Ad)

Diamond Painting Unboxing / Review -----> www.aimsysantics.co.uk

In today’s post, I am looking at a new(ish) craft of diamond painting and trying it out for the first time. An unboxing and review of VictoriasMoon 5d diamond painting kits.

This post is sponsored post with VictoriasMoon. They have gifted me the diamond painting kit in turn for an unboxing and review. All opinions are my own.

What is Diamond Painting?

Have you heard of diamond painting before? It is a great little craft that gives you a stunning picture at the end. Diamond painting is basically a 3d version of paint by numbers. Instead of paint you use ‘diamonds’ and match the corresponding space on the canvas. The technical term for the ‘diamonds’ is drills.

You can purchase kits that offer round drills or square drills. Both fill the canvas but do have slight differences. After researching, I discovered that the square drills fill the canvas slightly better than the round. This is because the edges of each drill match up, and there is less of a gap between them which you get with the circle drills.

This isn’t a craft that you can rush (although you can try), and can take days to weeks to fully complete. This is of course dependent on the canvas size, as well as how much time you choose to spend. A totally relaxing easy-going craft with wonderful results.

If you are looking at other relaxing crafts, then why not try Embroidery Wall Art or even Macrame.

VictoriasMoon Diamond Painting Kits

So, as I said at the start, I was kindly gifted the kit by VictoriasMoon. This is is an online store selling lots of 5d kits, as well as paint by numbers kits. They allowed me to pick a design in exchange for me sharing the unboxing and review of it.
VictoriasMoon is a UK company, that ship the crafty kits worldwide.

They also kindly provided a discount code, where you can get 10% off your order using the code:7TDW9DNEA8MW. If you fancy bagging yourself a kit to try out, then don’t forget to use it and save that 10%!

So, keep reading to see what you get in the VictoriasMoon diamond painting kit, as well what I thought of it. Just to note the picture isn’t finished, and therefore I will be doing a follow-up post and video showing how it is created and the final reveal.

Delivery & Packaging

VictoriasMoon is a UK based business who ship worldwide. The kit took around 1-2 weeks to arrive after ordering, however can take longer depending on where you are in the world.

The kit comes sealed, and fairly damage-free, well mine did anyway. Everything is neatly packed into a slim box, including the canvas, drills and tools to complete the picture. I have no complaints about the packaging. It protects the kit and looks pretty on the outside, whilst being compact.

What’s inside the diamond painting box?

In the diamond painting kit, you get the canvas, in the size chosen; packets of drills in the corresponding colours for the picture as well as tools to complete.

Canvas

The canvas can come in a range of sizes and I opted for fairly large size of 40cm x 55cm. I would say this is larger than A3 size paper. You can get smaller and you can get bigger canvas sizes.

The canvas comes with an adhesive backing to stick the drills onto, covered with a protective sheet. Under the adhesive is the grid to follow, with a key and small image of the chosen picture on the side.
Now, the grid is tiny, so I would advise working in good lighting and maybe use a magnifying glass at times where needed.

The adhesive is very tacky, and I don’t think there will be problems adhering the drills in place. The canvas is fairly lightweight too, and easily pliable, so hopefully this stiffens as you add more drills.

For extra ease, there is a seperate key on a print out to make it easier to see.

For reference, the image I chose is a window overlooking a beach scene; which you can find here. I thought that once complete, this will look lovely in the dining room.

Tools:

Now, there are quite a few tools in this kit, including the drills, pens/dabbers, tray, wax and extra adhesive.
There is one extra item that is available to purchase but does not come as standard with the kit. This is a very pretty crystal handle pen which allows the drills to be put into place. VictoriasMoon kindly sent me this with the kit, so I have tried out the standard pen and this version and will share my thoughts on both.

Tools in the diamond painting kit

Drills

For the image and size canvas of my kit, I received 34 different colour drills. The packets vary in amount, with some colours being fuller than others. I assume that this is the amount that you need for the image, with a few extras just in case. Obviously, the number of drills sent will depend on the size of the canvas chosen.
Each has a label which corresponds to the key and placement. These little baggies will come in handy when empty for storing some of my other craft supplies too!

Pens

You use a tool to attach the drills to the canvas. These are ‘pens’, however, do not have any ink in them. Instead, there is a pointy end where you dab wax to make it sticky. This in turn sticks the drill to it so that it can be put into place on the canvas. As I said previously, VictoriasMoon sent two types, the standard kit one, and a fancier crystal handle one.

The first one is a standard pen where you place wax on the end. It works well in placing the drills, and the wax on the end lasts. I stuck so many drills to the canvas with just one small amount of wax.
The pen itself has a really comfortable grip made with rubber. It cushions between the fingers, meaning that you can use it for hours without getting the dreaded sore that you get if you have been writing for the same amount of time. The pen is also lightweight, which makes it agile in the hand, and again helps with comfort when in use.

Testing out the kit pen

The second pen is slightly different as it has two ends. One end has a wax tip already, with the other end having a narrow tip for adding wax to. It is also really pretty with the crystals inside the handle. The pen doesn’t have a grip but is still comfortable in the hand when using.
The wax end was fabulous at sticking the drills to the end. Just the lightest of taps and the drill attaches. The downside to this though, is sometimes the drills attach at a slant which makes it difficult to be as precise. As the wax tip is thick, any intricate pieces may be more difficult. I guess that is where the other tip comes in.

Tray

To make it easier to place the drills on the canvas, there is a small tray. The tray has grooves which allow the drills to sit in, right side up. Just a shake of the tray and the drills move to sit into the grooves. This isn’t always successful and you may find some drills sit upside down.

The tray also has a small funnel, which allows you to replace any unused drills back into its bag.

Tweezers

Also included is a pair of pointed tweezers. These are great at moving the drills into place if they stick wrong. Or, to pick up drills that have escaped the tray. I know they will come in super handy for other craft projects as well!

Extra Adhesive & Wax

In the kit, you also get a small piece of wax to use to attach the drills. This went a long way, with a little piece of it lasting for a large section of the canvas.

There is also a small piece of double-sided adhesive, which I assume is to patch any missing adhesive on the canvas. I thought this was a good touch, as there is a chance of the canvas losing the stickiness with wear and tear on completing.

VictoriasMoon Diamond Painting Kit Thoughts

When I first saw the diamond painting kits, I didn’t really give it a second look, however, after having a try out of this craft, I know it is going to be something that I will enjoy.
I think this kit is a wonderful little craft kit. It is something that is going to keep me going for hours on end. There is something relaxing about pressing small drills into the canvas in a rhythmic way. Don’t get me wrong the smallness of the grid can be frustrating, but the outcome is going to look beautiful.
The kit comes with everything you need to complete and is organised well. I plan on grouping the drills to make them easier to find when interchanging too.

Like I said previously, this is a work in progress, and I have completed one corner so far. Due to the size, it is going to take a while to complete, but given the current circumstances of lockdown, will be a welcome distraction.
I can’t want to see how the full image turns out and share it with you!

  1. Oh my gosh I LOVE the sound of this!!! I’ve been getting into crafting a lot lately in lockdown (having recently started cross-stitch) but I think I’ve seen a Hello Kitty diamond painting template somewhere… Thanks so much for sharing, I had no idea that’s what it was called!

    1. Glad you like it! Hope you can find the Hello Kitty one, I bet it will look amazing when finished!

  2. Omg!! Diamond painting looks pretty cool! Though, a lot of work too because of the coordination with different letters and making sure they are right. I haven’t heard of it before, and the concept is so interesting. This definitely needs a lot of patience and endurance too. Your progress so car looks pretty cool! I want to see the end product! Thanks for sharing!

  3. Oo I saw a picture of you doing this and wasn’t sure what it was! Thank you for introducing it to me. It reminds me of little Bindeez which I had as a kid where you’d spray water and it connects the pieces. Obviously, a lot more gorgeous and intricate! Thank you for sharing your review

    1. Yes, it is a bit like that! Now that I am completing it, it is not a project for the faint-hearted…the pieces are so small so it is going to take a while to complete! Definitely, a nice way to pass some time though.
