Today I bring you another easy DIY project, in the form of a DIY wire wall grid. This is perfect to use as a memo board to organise yourself, as well as upcycling an old baking tray.

I have been wanting to make this DIY for a while but didn’t know how to go about it. That’s when inspiration struck when I saw Dainty Diaries DIY from a few years ago. This is such a genius idea with using a baking cooling tray. Yes, that’s right a baking cooling tray to create the DIY wire wall grid.
Now, you probably can buy these wire grids online, fairly cheaply now; however, where is the fun in that? Its time to get creative and have a go at making your own.

Now, alongside making this DIY wire wall grid, I also wanted to add in some new shelving units. I really want to create a bit more of functional space on the wall, so new shelving and this wire grid are the way forward.

DIY Wire Wall Grid

This grid is perfecting for having in your office/study, kitchen or even bedroom. It is the perfect way to clip up your to-do lists and motivational text. I plan on using this for motivational quotes, planning future DIY and craft projects, as well as having a bit of a mood board. You could also add a bit of your own DIY wall art. It is so versatile, you can put anything on it. This is also really easy and quick to upstyle, the only delay is the drying time between the coats of spray paint.

What You need:

To make this DIY wire wall grid, you will need the following items. Now, some of these items are affiliate links, which means I will earn a small amount of commission should you make a purchase through the link. This is at no extra cost to you. All affiliate links are marked with an asterisk (*).

• Wire Cooling Rack* – I like the folding part of this tray
• Primer spray paint*
• Spray paint* in whatever colour you like
• Spray sealer
• Wall picture hanging hooks
• Hammer
• Nails
• Small pegs or clips
• Decorations of choice

Step 1 – Prep the cool rack

The first step to complete is the prep of the cooling rack. Ideally, you want one that hasn’t been used for baking, as there may be residue grease that will stop the paint from adhering.
Give the wire rack a wipe down to remove any dirt. Then grab the primer spray paint. This is designed to help the actual spray paint adhere to the rack, as well as aid in preventing chipping of the paint.

Spray a coat of the primer on the front and back of the rack. Make sure that you allow one side to dry at a time. If you have hanging space where you can get to all sides of the rack, then you will cut down the time between spraying each side. Allow to dry and harden before moving onto the next step.

Step 2 – Apply chosen spray paint

Once the primer is dry, it is time to go in with your chosen colour. I have opted for a copper colour, however, I had a slight disaster between coats and ran out of this colour. So, the final coat of spray paint is a champagne gold colour with a hint of the copper.
You want to spray two coats following the direction on the spray paint can. Always allow enough drying time between coats and make sure one side is dry before turning over to spray the other. Allow the paint to dry.

Step 3 – Apply sealer

The final step in the spray painting is to apply a sealer. This will help keep the paint from chipping and lock in the colour. It can also add a bit of a sheen to the wire wall grid. Again, follow the directions on the spray can and allow to dry. The sealer can take a bit longer to cure, so make sure it has before attempting to hang the grid.

Step 4 – Hang the wire wall grid

Once the grid is dry it is time to hang it on the wall. You could also have the propped up against the wall, however, that option is ruled out if the wire rack folds in the middle like mine.

Use picture hooks to hang this with. Make sure that they can hold a decent amount of weight. The ones I used can hold up to 7kg, and I used two of these to hang it up. You could also use command hooks if the option of hammering the nails into the wall is out of the question.

Line these up where you want them to go. Don’t forget to use a spirit level to make sure the rack is straight on the wall. Then attach the hooks as per the instructions (usually with a hammer and nails).

Step 5 – Decorate the grid

Once the hooks are in place and the grid attached to the wall, it is time to decorate it up with whatever you like. Attach these with small pegs or clips. You could also use ‘S’ hooks to add items that also hang, e.g. a wall hanging. Just make sure that you are not adding too heavy an item for the wall hooks used.

Then the DIY wire wall grid is complete!

This turned out so well and was so easy to complete. I love that it is so versatile and the items can be switched up. Such a great way of getting organised and motivated, don’t you think? I would love to have a bigger version of this, if and when I get a full craft room.
