Looking for some delicious edible gifts to make this Christmas? Then, look no further as I have three delicious recipes to share with you today. Keep reading to see how to make these delightful hot chocolate stirrers.
Now, these hot chocolate stirrers are just delicious and perfect for having an indulgent treat this Christmas (or all year round). They make the perfect edible handmade gift that the recipient will love. What’s best with these is you can use them as stirrers, or if you are not a fan of hot chocolate but like a sweet treat then you can eat straight from the stick.
These go perfectly with some homemade roasted almonds, Biscoff Spread Flapjacks and Rhubarb and Ginger jam; if you are looking for other edible gift ideas!

Hot Chocolate Stirrers
What are hot chocolate stirrers? Well, they are basically blocks of yummy chocolate set onto a stirring stick. To enjoy them, all you have to do is heat up a cup of milk, stir them in and watch the magic. I have made these slightly different by adding in cream and condensed milk to give stirrers extra richness when melted. They are so easy to make, with the longest part being the setting time. As I said, they can also be enjoyed straight off the stick, as they are like a hard fudge.
There are three different recipes in this post that I will show you; dark chocolate, chocolate orange and a twist with white chocolate.

A word of warning, the orange chocolate version didn’t set fully as I wanted it to. However, I still wanted to include it in this post, as I think adjusting the ingredient amounts will help them set a lot better. They are still a yummy treat to have though and are a bit like a ganache/mousse. A delicious mishap indeed! Although not a recipe, this post of dealing with frustrations in DIY projects by Fransic Verso, is very fitting to this mishap!
Without further ado…let’s get crafting or is it baking?!

Dark Chocolate Stirrers
These are perfect for having a delicious hot chocolate and can have a variety of toppings to suit. I opted for mini marshmallows and mini fudge pieces, but you could add crushed candy canes or other pieces of chocolate.
To make the dark chocolate stirrers, you are going to need the following items.
Some items on this list are affiliate links, please see my disclaimer for more information on affiliate links. All links will be marked with an asterisk (*).
What you need:
- 500g dark chocolate
- 1/2 cup (approx 115g) of double cream
- 1 Tin (approx 397g) of Sweetened Condensed Milk
- Mini marshmallows or fudge
- Ice-cube mould*
- Wooden craft sticks/lollipop sticks*
- Medium size saucepan
- Piping bag or food bag

Step 1 – Mix Cream and Condensed Milk
In a medium-size saucepan; add in the double cream. Allow this to begin warming on low heat. Then, add in the tin of sweetened condensed milk. Stir the two together, keeping these on low heat, bringing to a very gentle simmer.

Step 2 – Add in Chocolate
When the cream and milk mixture is gently simmering, it is time to add in all the dark chocolate. Allow this to begin melting in and then remove from the heat to continue melting. The chocolate will gradually melt in over 5 – 10 minutes. If you want to speed this up, gently stir the mixture together.

Once the chocolate mixture has fully melted, it may look slightly grainy/lumpy. Continue to mix and fold this in until the mixture turns smooth and silky looking. Allow cooling for a few more minutes.

Step 3 – Place into Moulds
Next, place the chocolate mixture into a large piping bag. If you don’t have a piping bag, you can make a makeshift one with a sandwich/freezer bag. Place in the mixture and snip off one corner. Then begin piping the mixture into the ice cube mould.
Piping it in allows it to go in smoother and set more even. You can spoon it in, but it can create distinct layers in the mould.

Allow the mixture to thicken slightly before placing in the wooden craft sticks/lollipop sticks. Make sure these are in the middle of the cube. If the mixture is still a bit runny, you will find that the craft sticks move and droop to the side.
Finally, add on your preferred topping. I did half mini fudge and half mini marshmallows. I also couldn’t find mini fudge pieces so chopped up a fudge chocolate bar into smaller pieces.

Step 4 – Allow to cool and set
Allow the hot chocolate stirrers to cool and set. You can speed up this process by placing them in the fridge for a few hours. I like to leave them in the moulds for over 24 hours to make sure they have fully set.
Once they have set, gently remove them from the moulds and admire your handiwork. You can then enjoy them for yourself or package up for gifts.

Orange Chocolate Stirrers
These bring together the yumminess of chocolate and orange. Imagine Terry’s chocolate orange melted down in a lovely hot cup of milk. To make these, you will need the same items as before, but different chocolate.
As I said previously, these ones didn’t fully set and remained quite soft. I am not sure if it is the milk content in the chocolate or the quantities of the cream/condensed milk. I would advise looking for dark chocolate with orange rather than the milk chocolate version. Also if you find that it doesn’t set, play about with the amount of cream and condensed milk, as this may help it set better.
Sometimes you have to show the disasters to get the good results, right?
What you need:
- 500g dark orange chocolate
- 1/2 cup (115g approx) double cream
- 1 tin (397g) Sweetened Condensed Milk
- Orange zest
You will also need the craft sticks and ice cube moulds as before.

Step 1 – Melt ingredients
Like before, place the cream and condensed milk into a medium-size pan. Gently simmer before adding in the orange chocolate, and allow to melt slightly. Then, remove from the heat and allow to fully melt in.
Stir the chocolate until it is smooth and silky.

Step 2 – Pipe into Mould
Again pipe the orange chocolate mixture into the ice cube moulds. Allow to cool and firm up a little before placing on the orange zest. If you place it on too early, then the zest will sink into the chocolate and you won’t have the lovely pop of colour on top. Then place in the wooden craft sticks.

Allow to cool and harden (hopefully!) before removing from the mould. Then they are ready to be enjoyed or given away as gifts. Hopefully, yours will turn out better than my attempt! Luckily these stirrers were a tasty mishap and were still enjoyed!

White Chocolate Stirrers
These stirrers are slightly different from the traditional hot chocolate as they are made from white chocolate. These take on a creamier sweet taste and would be perfect for the white chocolate lovers out there. Again, these ones can be a bit temperamental and have the possibility of not setting fully. These may go more like a fudge consistency but still melt well in hot milk wonderfully.
What you need:
- 500g White Chocolate
- 1/2 cup (115g approx) double cream
- 1 tin (397g) Sweetened Condensed Milk
- Nutmeg for topping

Step 1 – Melt the ingredients together
Like the previous two stirrers, heat the cream and condensed milk together. Then add in the white chocolate. Remove from the heat and allow the chocolate to melt. You will find the white chocolate melts faster than the previous two chocolates.
Again, mix until smooth and creamy in texture.

Step 2 – Pipe into Moulds
When the chocolate has thickened slightly pipe it into the moulds. Allow it to thicken further before adding in the wooden craft sticks. Complete this with a dusting of nutmeg over the top.

Allow to cool and set before removing from the moulds. Then the white chocolate stirrers are complete.

Hot Chocolate Stirrers Advice
Once the hot chocolate stirrers are made, I would recommend keeping them in an airtight container. This will help keep them fresh for a bit longer. Also, keep them somewhere cool to stop them from melting outside of the hot chocolate mug.
The stirrers should be consumed within 2 weeks of making. If you are planning on giving these away as gifts, I would recommend making them as close to the gift-giving date as possible. This will ensure they are as fresh as possible for the receiver.
The chocolate stirrers may take between 5 – 10 minutes to melt in. It depends on how hot your milk is, as well as how hard set/cold the chocolate is.

OOO! Serious hunger over here! These all look so good and I love that I could interchange the chocolate and flavors. White and milk chocolate are my favorite chocolates and both go so well with treats like marshmallows, fudge pieces, candy canes, or even butterscotch and caramel chips.
Thanks for sharing these delicious gift and self-gift ideas.
I am so glad you like them! They are so versatile, you could add different essences in, so peppermint and may even rose. I hadn’t thought of butterscotch and caramel chips, but they would just be divine!
Thank you so much for commenting and I hope you enjoy the chocolatey goodness!

Using an ice cube tray for your mold was totally genius… and your secret ingredients are definitely the cream and condensed milk. Those add so much fabulous richness to the hot chocolate!
They can be a little tricky to get out but are a fab size for the stirrers. Definitely ass a bit of richness!
