Avocado Bath Bomb | A Lush Dupe of “Avobath”

Avocado bath bombs --- www.aimsysantics.co.uk

Fancy having a go at making your own version of one of Lush’s most popular bath bombs? See how to make your own avocado bath bomb for a fab Lush dupe of Avobath.

I am back with another Beauty DIY for you today. This time it is in the form of a Lush bath bomb dupe of their ever-popular “Avobath”. That’s right we are looking to make your own avocado bath bomb.
As with all of my previous Lush dupes Angels of Bare Skin and Ultrabland, there are some differences to the actual Lush version. This bath bomb recipe does not contain all of the ingredients that Avobath has, as well as having a slightly different scent too. BUT it does contain the same key ingredient…avocado. Yes, we are putting in fresh avocado into this bath bomb!

*Disclaimer – I am not a skincare expert but love experimenting in making my own skincare. Please make and use at your caution. This recipe should be for personal use and not for commercial use. This may infringe on Lush’s patents of their bath bombs if you do. Please do your own research.*

Avocado – Skin benefits

Now, I am not an expert in skincare, but I have done a little research into how avocado is beneficial to the skin.
Avocados are full of healthy fats, and packed with vitamins like A, B, C and E; which are great for healthy-looking skin. It can apparently help with dry skin, as well as support the healing of skin from skin conditions, such as acne and eczema. It can also help in improving skin elasticity, which in turn helps the ageing appearance of skin. What’s not to love?

Adding the avocado to this bath bomb definitely ups the moisturising effects to leave you skin supple and soft.

Avocado Bath Bomb

Not only is this bath bomb super moisturising for the skin, but it also helps awaken the senses. At least that is according to the description of Lush’s Avobath. Now, in Lush’s version they use lemongrass; however, I had run out of this essential oil, so substituted it for lemon oil. Lemon essential oil is also a great mood booster like lemongrass, so I don’t think it has hampered the bath bomb’s effects too much. The added bergamot essential oil really adds to the uplifting effect of this bath bomb too, so you are moisturised and uplifted after your long soak in the bath.

So, if this has pricked your interest and you would like to have a go at making your own version with an avocado bath bomb, then let’s get crafting!

What you need:

To make the avocado bath bomb, you are going to need the following ingredients and items:
** Please note some of these items are affiliate links. This means that I may earn a small amount of commission should you make a purchase through the link. This is at no extra cost to you. All items will be marked (*) **

This recipe will make approximately 3 large bath bombs, and maybe 1-2 smaller bath bombs. To make a larger batch, double up the measurements indicated above.

Ingredients needed to make

Step 1 – Add dry ingredients together

Firstly, you want to prepare a tray by lining it with parchment/greaseproof paper. This will house your bath bombs when they are made and allow them to dry. The greaseproof paper should not stick to your bath bombs.

Add into a large bowl the bicarbonate of soda and cornflour/cornstarch. Then add in the citric acid. Ideally, you want to sift these in to reduce any lumps and bumps that may form in your bath bombs, but don’t worry if you don’t. I didn’t sift mine and the bath bombs still turned out smooth.
Mix all together well with a whisk and set aside.

Step 2 – Blend the Avocado

The next step is to blend up your avocado. Place this into a suitable container or jug and add in the extra virgin olive oil. Then, using a hand blender/stick blender, blend the avocado until it is runny and smooth. You want to make sure that you get all of the lumps out and create a nice smooth runny paste.

It is easier to blend half an avocado for this recipe, but I found that you do not need this full amount for the bath bombs. You can always make an extra bath to use the avocado and olive oil mix up or save it and make some form of a facemask with it.

Step 3 – Add the colour

This step is optional and there are two ways to add in the colour to these bath bombs. You can either add the green soap colour to the avocado mix or to the dry ingredients. Adding the colour to the dry ingredients is easier in seeing what colour the bath bomb will be once dry. I would advise this way if you are wanting the avocado bath bombs a certain colour. Also, if you are planning on using the leftover the avocado paste, then adding the colour to the dry ingredients may be best.

I opted to add to the avocado mix for ease and to save a bit of time. Because the avocado paste is quite a bright green, it was very difficult to ascertain how many colours as needed and changed with the soap colour. Turned out to be a really nice pale green colour in the end though, which I was happy with.

Step 4 – Add essential oils

Before mixing the avocado with the dry ingredients, you first want to add the essential oils. I am adding equal amounts of lemon essential oil and bergamot essential oils to these bath bombs. Ideally, when making any form of beauty product you should measure out in weight rather than cups. This way you can accurately add the appropriate and safe amount of fragrance / essential oil. I have made bath bombs previously where 3 ml of essential oil is safe for skin, and this recipe is roughly the same in weight. If unsure add slightly less than stated here.

Use a pipette to measure out the essential oils, and add them to the dry mixture, whisking and mixing as you do so. You want to make sure you mix it in fast, so reduce the amount of fizzing to your bath bomb. If not your bath bombs may be a bit of a disappointment when placed into the bath.

Adding essential oil to the dry ingredient mix

Step 5 – Add in the avocado

Once the essential oils have been added, it is time to begin adding in the avocado. Spoon this in a little at a time and mix it in thoroughly. As you add, you will see the mixture begin to clump and become damp. Again, mix quickly to reduce any fizzing of the bicarbonate of soda and citric acid.

Once the mixture is starting to clump, you want to go in with your hands and mix. This will help you notice the correct texture and consistency to form your bath bombs. As with all bath bombs you want a damp sand type consistency. To test whether it is at the right point, squeeze a clump of the mixture tightly in your hand. Then, pass it between one hand to the other several times. If the formed ball begins to crumble, the mixture is too wet, but if the majority of the mixture remains clumped you know you have got it right.

If you find you have added too much of the avocado mix and the mixture appears to be expanding, then you want to add in a bit more bicarbonate of soda. This is similar to when baking and adding in extra flour to thicken a dough for example.

Mixture clumped together to form the correct consistency

Step 6 – Form the avocado bath bombs

Now is the fun part of forming your bath bombs. You can use any bath bomb mould shape for this really, but I have gone with the traditional round ball shape.
Start by filling one half of the mould with the bath bomb mixture. Don’t pack it in, leave it loose in the mould. Always overfill the mould, as this helps in pushing the bath bomb together. Repeat the same process with the remaining half of the bath bomb mould.

Then place the two halves together and evenly press until boh moulds meet in the middle. Rub off any excess that may have been pushed out from the middle back into the bowl. Some people like to leave their bath bombs in the moulds like this for a few hours to harden, but I like to remove them straight away. This lets me know if I have got the right consistency to the mix and whether they are holding together. I would hate to remove a bath bomb from a mould several hours later to find that it was too dry and hadn’t stuck.

Bath bomb mould pressed together

To remove from the mould, hold in one hand and tap each side gently with a spoon. This will help relieve any air pressure that has formed and aid in releasing the bath bomb. Again, remember to tap this gently, the bath bomb is delicate at this point. Choose one half to remove and gently remove this. It should come away easily if it doesn’t give it another gently tap with the spoon. Then turn over the bath bomb, so that the newly exposed side in your hand and remove the remaining half of the bath bomb.
You should then have an avocado bath bomb fully formed.

Step 7 – Allow to dry and harden

Place the newly made bath bombs onto the prepared tray and allow to dry and harden for 24-48 hours. Turn them after they have begun to harden during this period so that one end doesn’t flatten too much. Your house will smell amazing whilst these dry too!

Then your avocado bath bombs are ready to be used. Keep them in an airtight container so that moisture does not get to your bath bombs and ruins them. You may find if left for a long period of time, that they may not fizz as well in the bath, but you will still get a lovely bathing experience.

Top tip:

Any leftover bath bomb mixture that isn’t enough to make a bath bomb can be placed into a sandwich bag or jar. You can then sprinkle this into your bath, similar to a bath salt. You are still getting the goodness of the bath bomb, but without the dramatics of the fizz and swirl of them.

It definitely seems quite do-able following your instructions, and I do enjoy using a bath bomb every so often. I only have 2 at the moment in my bathroom so maybe its a sign to have a go at making my own!

They can be so expensive when you buy them out – so might as well save some money and treat yourself to some nice self-care treatment more regularly. Ooooh! I like that you can actually use blended avocados for this. Thanks for sharing all of these great tips!
