Today we are going mean with this DIY project, but one that is going to turn out so fetch, and will only be melted on a Wednesday! That’s right I am going to show you how to make your own DIY wax melts, that are Mean Girls inspired.

I am bringing back a bit of my youth in today’s post and throwing it back to the movie Mean Girls. That’s right, I am taking inspiration from the film and making these DIY wax melts. This film has so many great quotes in it, that I just had to use them for inspiration for the wax melts. These are great to make for yourself or make for the Mean Girls fan as a gift (like I did).

DIY Wax Melts

Wax melts or wax tarts are a great alternative to burning a candle. They simply melt on top of a burner, which can be either electric or with a tealight. Wax melts are a great way to have fragrance fill your room too, whilst emitting that candle-like glow from the burner. Not only this, but they are incredibly easy to make yourself at home.
I have previously made festive candles and wax melts, as well as teacup candles and an outdoor Citronella candle. But, today I thought I would share five easy DIY wax melts inspired by Mean Girls quotes.

So without further ado…Let’s get crafting!

DIY Wax Melts – what you need:

To make your own DIY wax melts, you are going to need the following items. For each wax melt, there will be different fragrance oil, which I will link with the corresponding melt. Some of the items in this list are affiliate links. This means that I earn a small amount of commission, should you purchase through the link. This is at no extra cost to you and will be marked with an asterisk (*).

The wax used for wax melts is pillar wax rather than container wax. This is so the wax holds its shape in the mould, and is easier to release from the mould. Container wax is a bit more ‘sticky’ so the wax adheres to the candle jar/container and is harder to release from a mould.

Wax Melt 1 – ‘On Birthdays We Melt Pink’

This wax melt is inspired by the quote “On Wednesdays we wear pink!” Can you tell it was for a birthday too? 😂 The fragrance oil of choice is “Birthday cake” by Craftovator. I have previously used this when making Cupcake soap and it is such a great fragrance. You get a wonderful sweetness with this fragrance oil and is perfect for any type of birthday gift.

These wax melts are also a fabulous bright pink colour, with a hint of sparkle glitter. Not only that, they are a lovely geometric heart shape. So, here is how to make your own. I will show a breakdown of this wax melt, and then give an overview of the other four, as the process of making is the same.

Step 1 – Measuring Wax and Fragrance oil

Before we can begin making these DIY wax melts, we need to know how much wax to use. Working this out is fairly simple to do. Select your chosen mould and fill it with water. For mine, I filled one of the moulds within the set, so one of the hearts and one of the snap bar mould. Carefully place the water into a measuring jug, and take note of the measurement. From this, you then want to subtract 20% of this measurement. This should then give you the total amount of wax in grams. For example:

1 snap bar = 50ml – 20% (10) = 40g

You then, simply adjust this to match how many of the moulds you want to fill. So, for two of the snap bars or hearts, it would equate to 80g and so on and so forth.

To work out the amount of fragrance, we need to do some more maths. Work out 10% of the total weight. So, 10% of 40g equals 4g of fragrance. Again adjust this to suit the number of moulds that are being filled. The wax you use will tell you the amount of fragrance load, and it can be lower than 10%. I’ve found that 10% gives a good hot and cold scent to the wax melts.

Use weighing scales to measure out your measurements so that you can get them exact. I like to measure out my fragrance oil into a separate cup so that I don’t accidentally add too much to the actual wax. You don’t want to have melted all the wax to then ruin it by adding too much of the fragrance oil.

Step 2 – Melt the wax

Place the wax melting pot into a pan with a little water ban-Marie style. Begin melting the pillar wax down. The wax packet should tell you what the wax melting point is for the wax you are using. The one I use has a melting point between 50°c – 90°c.

Once the wax is partway melted, it is time to add in the wax colourant. There are several types of candle dye, but I like to use the wax version as opposed to the liquid dye. To get the more vibrant shade of pink, I added quite a few pieces of the dye, however, add as many as you feel you need. A little does go a long way, but not all candle dyes are made equal, so you have to experiment with the shade.

It can be difficult to tell what the colour will be when setting. Generally, the more opaque the colour goes, the darker the colour will be when set. If it is fairly translucent, then the colour will be a lot lighter and more pastel in shade. You also have to take into account the soy wax colour. This is a creamy colour when set, so this may alter the shade of the colourant slightly.

Step 3 – Add Fragrance

Once the wax is fully melted, it is time to remove it from the heat. Then you want to test the temperature of the wax. Again, the packaging of the wax should indicate the temperature to add the fragrance, but generally, fragrance should be added between 75°c – 80°c. I like to leave mine to around 75°c, as I have found that I get the best scent throw at this temperature.

Pour in the fragrance oil and use the wooden craft stick to give this a thorough stir. You want to really combine the fragrance oil with the wax molecules. The fragrance oil will begin cooling down the wax too, which is where we move onto the next step.

Step 4 – Pour into Mould

Allow the wax to continue to cool down to between 50°c – 70°c before pouring into the mould. This temperature is especially important when making candles. I like to let my wax get to around 60°c before pouring and get great results with this.

Before pouring the wax into the mould, add a sprinkle of glitter to the bottom of the mould. This will give the wax melts a little sparkle on the top. I wouldn’t advise placing glitter in candles as this can be quite flammable, however, it is a bit safer with wax melts, as there isn’t a flame involved.

Step 5 – Allow to Cool & Set

Once the wax has been poured into the mould, it is time to let it cool and harden. Make sure that the mould isn’t moved whilst it is still warm, as this may distort the wax melts. You also want to leave these for several hours, or even overnight to fully harden. when ready, simply remove them from the mould.

Then, the DIY wax melt/ On Birthdays we Melt Pink is ready to use. To use, place it into your wax burner, allow it to melt and release the fragrance.

So, now that the “On Birthdays we Melt Pink” is complete, lets move onto the next four mean girls inspired wax melts!

DIY Wax Melts – “It’s Oct 3rd”

So, this is one of the iconic lines from the film, isn’t it? For this wax melt, you need to follow the process of making the wax melt above, however this time I am using the snap bar mould. This is basically a chocolate bar mould and allows you to break off chunks of the wax melts.

The fragrance oil of choice this time is “Rhubarb Gin” by Supplies for Candles. It smells amazing, and actually like the sweet smell of rhubarb gin. This one also has a great scent throw in the wax melts and is perfect for the gin lover out there.

The wax is coloured with a light pink shade to emulate the rhubarb gin. Finishing off the design with a pale pink glitter in the bottom of the mould too. What do you think of this DIY wax melt?

DIY Wax Melt – “I Want My Pink Shirt Back!”

Do you know this quote from the film? This is from the part where Damien and Cady have fallen out, and he yells this out of the car when driving away.

Now, this one didn’t really go the shade I thought it would. Remember me mentioning trying to get the right shade above? Well, I didn’t quite get the shade of pink I wanted. I used a ‘Fuschia pink’ wax dye that ended up going pink-purple tone. Not exactly the pink shirt vibes, but still a pretty shade nonetheless. I also added in a purple-pink glitter to match in the mould too.

The fragrance oil in this wax melt is “Pink Champagne” by Supplies for Candles. I have previously used a similar fragrance in making a bubble bar. This one, again has a sweet scent to it, with a bit of tartness.

DIY Wax Melt -“You Go Glen Coco!

Now, this has to be one of the best quotes from the film right? You know the scene, where they are handing out candy canes and Glen Coco practically gets them all.

So, to make the “You Go Glen Coco”, I am using the fragrance oil “Thai Line & Mago” by Supplies for Candles. As the name suggests, this is a fruity type of scent. Unfortunately, I cannot link to this fragrance oil as it is no longer available on the site, sorry!

For the colour, I mixed orange and pink to create a coral type pink. This was to one, give a different shade of pink and two, try to represent the candy canes a little, by bringing it a little more red. Again, adding in some glitter, which was rose gold/orange to the bottom of the mould.

DIY Wax Melt – “She Doesn’t Even Go Here”

Ok, this one is my favourite out of all the DIY wax melts. For one, this is an underrated quote from the film. Do you know it? It’s from near the end of the film when all the girls in school have been brought into the gym to discuss the ‘Burn Book’. Damien has also sneaked in in disguise wearing a blue hoodie and shouts “she doesn’t even go here” to a girl who doesn’t go to school.

The second reason this is my favourite is because of the fragrance oil in it. This one is a fragrance dupe and one that will cost you a lot less if you make these yourself. The fragrance of choice is “Seychelles” by Supplies for Candles. This is a dupe for The White Company’s popular ‘Syechelles’ fragrance. Let me tell you, this is a fantastic dupe, it smells just like the more expensive version. I would definitely recommend this if you like the White Company candles!

Taking inspiration from both the blue hoodie and Seychelles, this wax melt has a hint of blue. No colour is added to the wax, meaning that it remains the lovely creamy colour that you see before melting. The pop of colour comes from the two glitters added; a fine blue glitter mixed with a chunky mermaid glitter. The glitter gives off the blue tones, mixed with purples and greens, which I think matches in with the blue hoodie, but also what the beach of Seychelles would be. Do you see it?
