A beauty DIY in this week’s post, designed to give you that at-home spa experience when in the shower. That’s right here is how to make DIY shower fizzies. A perfect way to unwind in the shower with the use of essential oils
Lockdown is easing, but life just isn’t the same at the moment. We all need to look after ourselves, and what better way than having a bit of a pamper? Spas have started opening, however, there are many changes to how this works. Many treatments are not available, and belongings such as mobile phones and magazines cannot be taken into the treatment room. Not totally the relaxing spa treatment as expected.
So, I thought I’d have a go at making a DIY beauty product that gives a bit of a spa experience at home. Now, this is more for the atmosphere of a spa rather than a spa-like treatment with these DIY shower fizzies.

I love having a go at making my own beauty products, and this past week I have had a go at creating the DIY shower fizzies with essential oils. Now, my essential oil collection has certainly increased since having a go at making my own beauty products. DIY Ultrabland and DIY Angels on Bare Skin are just a few of the recent makes using essential oils.
Essential oils can have a real benefit to your health and boosting your mood. A perfect choice to adding into the shower fizzies. But what are shower fizzies and how do they work?
DIY Shower Fizzies
Shower fizzies are basically a bit of a bath bomb but for shower lovers. Now, they don’t offer the same skin moisturising benefits, like Avocado bath bombs but release relaxing aromas instead. Perfect for a bit of aromatherapy in the shower.
They are small blocks that you place in the bottom of the shower, just out of the direct water stream. When the steam and bits of water hit them, they begin to fizz. This, in turn, releases the lovely essential oils used to make them, giving you a true aromatherapy experience in your shower.
Ruffles and Rain Boots have a great explanation of the shower fizzies.

So now, that we know how the shower fizzies work, it is time to have a go at making them.
In this post, you will find three different essential oil blends to give you a different aromatherapy experience. Mood-boosting, spa experience and floral goodness!

How to Make DIY Shower Fizzies
So, as I said there are a few different essential oil blends in this post, but the base of the fizzies doesn’t change. So to make the shower fizzies, you are going to need the following:
**Some items on this list are affiliate links, which means I will earn a small amount of commission should you purchase through the link. This is at no extra cost to you and is marked with an asterisk (*)**
What you need – Fizzy Base:
- 1 cup Bicarbonate Soda*
- 1/2 cup of Citric Acid*
- 1/2 cup of Cornflour/starch
- Witch Hazel in a spray bottle*
- Small Bath Bomb Mould*
- Large glass mixing bowl
- Measuring cups
- Pipette
- Whisk
- Spoon
That is the base of your shower fizzies, as well as some items you will need to make them. These fizzies have been made to a 2% dilution of essential rather than the usual 1% dilution in bath bombs. I wouldn’t recommend using them on the skin because of this.
Uplifting Citrus
- 2ml Lime essential oil
- 1 ml Sandalwood essential oil
- 2ml Orange essential oil

Step 1 – Add dry ingredients
Start by making the base for the shower fizzies. Add in the bicarbonate soda, cornflour/starch and citric acid in a clean large glass bowl. Sift these if needed so that the powders are lump-free.
Mix together with a whisk until all mixed together.

Step 2 – Add essential oils
Then it is time to add in the essential oils. Use a pipette to do so, as this gives more control of how much is being added, and you can measure out in millilitres. Mix the mixture whilst adding in the essential oils to reduce the fizzies from fizzing.
Lime essential oil can aid in uplifting mood, as well as reducing stress and anxiety. It has a lovely zingy citrus aroma. Sandalwood is known to aid in reducing anxiety as well and offering a solution to insomnia. It is also believed to enhance mental awareness too. Orange essential oil is again known to lower anxiety and stress and lift your mood. A great blend together for that uplifting citrus boost.

Step 3 – Form the Fizzies
Now it is time to use the witch hazel in the spray bottle to dampen the mixture further. Spritz in short bursts of no more than 2-3 times at once. Mix the mixture quickly when doing this to reduce the fizzing of the shower fizzies. Like a bath bomb, the consistency should be that of wet sand. Once the mixture is mouldable in hand and retains the shape when passed from one hand to another then the mixture is ready.

Use one half of a small bath bomb mould and sprinkle in the mixture, over-filling it slightly. Press the mixture down into the mould using your hand. Try to apply even pressure so that the mixture sticks together as evenly as possible. Then, turn the mould over so the round part is sticking up, and gently tap the mould with a spoon. This will release any air pressure in the mould to release the fizzy. Place the DIY shower fizzies onto a waiting lined tray. Greaseproof paper is a great liner for drying the fizzies on.

Allow to dry and harden for at least 24 hours before using. Store in an airtight container to reduce them from fizzing outside the shower.

At-Home Spa
- 1ml Rosemary essential oil
- 1 ml Peppermint essential oil
- 0.5ml Orange essential oil
- 1ml Lavender essential oil
- 0.5 ml Tea tree essential oil

Repeat the same initial steps to form the base for the DIY shower fizzies above. Then add in the essential oils above. This mixture is supposed to represent the smell of what you would get in a spa. Perfect for that at-home spa experience.

Rosemary essential oil can help reduce stress, pain and increase concentration, as well as uplifting mood. Peppermint oil can be used as a pick-me-up and can give a boost of energy when inhaled. The lavender essential oil has been known to reduce tension and ease nerves. It is probably most known for helping you to relax and get a restful night to sleep too. Tea tree oil can help purify and freshen the air as it diffuses. Combining tea tree with the other oils can help awaken the senses too apparently.

Relaxing Florals
- 1.5ml Lavender essential oil
- 1.5ml Geranium essential oil
- 0.5ml Clary sage essential oil
- 1.5ml Rose absolute

Like above, create the base for the shower fizzies and then add in the essential oils above.
Lavender has just been mentioned above, it has a lovely relaxing floral scent to it. Geranium oil is one of my favourites but can be quite a strong-smelling essential oil. It is known to reduce stress, calm nerves and create a calming effect. Clary sage is very similar in scent to lavender (I think) but less potent in smell. It can reduce stress and calm the mind like the other essential oils in this blend. Rose absolute is another favourite of mine and can again, reduce stress and anxiety.

There you have how to make DIY shower fizzies, perfect for creating an at-home spa experience. These will be perfect when paired with a lovely pampering face scrub or mask in the shower.

I’ve never used shower fizzes before but I can see how relaxing they would be when the scent gets released! I like the sound of the citrus one for uplifting the mood, and I do love lavender scents for when I’m feeling a bit anxious. These sound great!

Oh, these smell lovely in the shower! I’ve found the citrus one also smells a bit like cola bottle sweets when in the container. They become more citrus when in the shower though…I think it might be the sandalwood.

When I first saw this I thought of bath bombs. I have never heard of the shower fizzy concept! This is a neat idea! I’ve recently discovered how great it is to make your own DIY products because of Plastic Free July. This is definitely one to add to the list to try š
Oh, these are so much cheaper to make than buy as well! So you can have plastic-free and low-buy in one! Lush do a version that is shower bombs, that you can lather onto the skin, these ones are purely for the aromatherapy benefits than for use on the skin.
Glad you like and happy crafting!

I’ve never heard of shower fizzes and I honest thought that this was a bath bomb! What a cool idea and they look alot easier to make than what I expected. I’ll have to give it a try x
I guess it is a bath bomb but just for the shower! They are really easy to make, and you don’t have the worry of them not sticking together like you do a bath bomb. You will have to let me know how yours turn out if you do give them a go. Happy crafting and spa-ing!

I’ve always wondered what shower fizzies were! I’d seen them in beauty shops but had no idea how they worked haha. I love the sound of the one made using sandalwood, that sounds like such a relaxing aroma x

They are also called shower steamers and melts, but I like the sound of fizzies better haha! The sandalwood one is lovely in the shower, and I think it smells a bit like the cola bottle sweets when it’s in the container too.

I have never tried making shower fizzies before but this looks like something GREAT for me! I have been taking a shower when my allergies are overly bad as the steam helps my sinuses. Plus, I use peppermint oil to manage my allergy symptoms, wearing a lava rock bracelet with it. I am going to have to make some peppermint fizzies to combine the two!
That’s the great thing about these, you can have any combination of essential oils that you want. Peppermint ones sound lovely, and will definitely help with the sinuses! Glad you like, and happy crafting! You will have to let me know how yours turn out, and if they do the job!

I love the sound of the shower fizzies! I’m much more of a shower person than a bath person but I do miss the idea of bath bombs sometimes. These are so easy to make too! As they have essential oils in anyway, do you think they’d work with a drop of something like almond oil in too for a little added moisture? x
Sophie
I know, why should baths have all the fun? haha. These are so easy to make, easier than a bath bomb as you don’t have to make them stick together. You could add something in for a little moisture, but they may make your bath quite slippy so just be careful. They’re mainly just to release the aromas rather than moisturise, but you could experiment with it.

I hadn’t until I did a little research. Definitely great for the shower lovers!

Since I rarely take a bath, your shower fizzies are a totally brilliant alternative. I love that you used the lavender essential oil, that is my very favorite!
These are perfect for the shower lover, aren’t they? Lavender is one of my favourites too, but the geranium takes over the floral one more (another of my favourites). Glad you like them!

I actually thought they were bath bombs. But shower fizzles seems like a great idea. I’ve never heard of this before so I wonder how it stays like a glue. I love taking showers so this is great. Thanks for sharing
They are very similar to bath bombs, and you form them in a similar way. This is more for the aromatherapy of them than for the skin like a bath bomb though, so the oils are left out. Definitely gives the shower something else!

Definitely! Might have to make my own x
I love how white these are, and there is nothing like a fizzy to jazz up a bath. I want to make these and use them one night in my hot-tub! Thanks for sharing. š
Ooo they would be great near the hot tub, definitely a spa experience then. I would put them on the side, rather than in the tub, and let the water splash/steam them.
